Sleep Check

Why should my Melatonin levels be tested?

Low Melatonin, in response to aging or stress, is a primary cause of insomnia & feeling cranky. SleepCheck measures the level of melatonin in your system. Although it plays a role in many other areas of your body, such as cardiovascular function, female reproductive hormones, and as an antioxidant, melatonin's primary contribution is to your body's ability for quality sleep and the regulation of your circadian rhythm. An imbalance of melatonin been shown to be the underlying cause for symptoms associated with:

  • Fatigue

  • Sleep Disorders

  • Depression/Irritability

These are just some of the areas melatonin can influence. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or conditions, a simple diagnostic test such as SleepCheck can help to establish the cause.

How does the test work?

Saliva testing is a simple, stress free and a noninvasive means that allows you to assess hormone levels relative to your age and gender. Included with your test kit are an instruction sheet, three collection tubes, three labels, a biohazard bag with absorbent pad, a prepaid mailing envelope, a return box (with biohazard label) and a health screen request form.

Simply follow the enclosed instructions and mail your sample to Great Smokies Diagnositc Laboratories. Your results will be mailed directly to your home within seven business days.

When do I collect the samples?

To ensure the accuracy of results, please observe the following: The first saliva sample needs to be collected at 8 a.m. (after a good night's sleep!) when melatonin levels are at their lowest and the second sample at 12 midnight when levels are at their peak. On the day prior to collection, avoid the following foods: bananas, tomatoes, barley, oats, corn, rice and ginger. One hour prior to saliva collection, do not eat, brush your teeth or use mouthwash.
