VegePure™

Serenity for Women Cream contains a plant-based moisturizer, VegePure™

Technical Specifications

Most creams and other cosmetic formulaes contain mineral oil (a petroleum derivative). While many materials can provide some temporary relief of dry skin by acting as humectants or emollients, few materials can actually repair the skin's moisture barrier to provide immediate relief of the symptoms of dry skin. The glycolipids and natural oils found in Vegepure™ have been shown to do this and over time actually cure dry skin.

Published studies have led to the conclusion that Vegepure™, used at cosmetically relevant levels has the ability to restore and repair the epidermal water barrier and this repair can be observed on a laboratory, clinical and consumer level.

Several studies have been conducted to determine the effect of Vegepure™ on the skin and the potential benefits realized by its use as a skin care ingredient. The results of those tests are as follows:

Accumulation in the Skin (Stratum Corneum)

The test material presented as a 15% suspension of Vegepure™ in a neutralized Carbopol dispersion (with no other lipids present) was applied daily to the lower legs of test subjects twice a day for a period of two weeks. After the test period, shave biopsies of the skin (stratum corneum) and outer epidermis were taken and quantified using image analysis.

The results indicated that after two weeks of treatment

  • Vegepure™ contributed to a marked accumulation of lipid material found in the stratum corneum accounting for an 88% increase in absorption of neutral red.

  • Vegepure™ treated legs showed a 66% decrease in cells removable by a detergent scrub after treatment than was seen before treatment began.

  • The data obtained from the above study is consistent with a better organized, more intact stratum corneum.

Effect on Biophysical Properties of the Skin

Several studies were run to look at the effects of using Vegepure™ (15% in Carbopol) in a skin treatment program. The properties monitored were cell renewal rate, hydration and reduction in skin dryness.

The following results were obtained from those studies

  • Vegepure™ improved cell renewal rate by 15% most probably due to the levels of glycolipids present.

  • Vegepure™ improved skin hydration for more than 12 hours as measured by gas bearing electrodynamometry.

  • The dynamic spring rate shows that Vegepure induces a rapid increase in hydration of long duration.

Toxicological Profile

Vegepure™ has been found to be nontoxic. It will not irritate skin or eyes and is non-acnegenic.

Stability

Vegepure™ resists the auto-oxidation (rancidity) sometimes associated with oils. Vegepure™ remains unchanged at temperatures as high as 200°C, while mineral oil undergoes an exothermic oxidation (rancidity).

Conclusion

Vegepure™ improved skin dryness by 48% in a 4 week clinical study versus the Carbopol vehicle alone
